The 1935 Republican River Flood (Disaster)

PDF The 1935 Republican River Flood (Disaster) by Joy Hayden in History

Description

Reframing feminism for the twenty-first century; this bold and essential history stands up against "bland corporate manifestos" (Sarah Leonard). Eschewing the conventional wisdom that places the origins of the American women’s movement in the nostalgic glow of the late 1960s; Feminism Unfinished traces the beginnings of this seminal American social movement to the 1920s; in the process creating an expanded; historical narrative that dramatically rewrites a century of American women’s history. Also challenging the contemporary “lean-in;” trickle-down feminist philosophy and asserting that women’s histories all too often depoliticize politics; labor issues; and divergent economic circumstances; Dorothy Sue Cobble; Linda Gordon; and Astrid Henry demonstrate that the post-Suffrage women’s movement focused on exploitation of women in the workplace as well as on inherent sexual rights. The authors carefully revise our “wave” vision of feminism; which previously suggested that there were clear breaks and sharp divisions within these media-driven “waves.” Showing how history books have obscured the notable activism by working-class and minority women in the past; Feminism Unfinished provides a much-needed corrective. 20 illustrations

Good storytellingBy JohnI used to live in the Republican River valley and heard a few comments about the flood from those who had relatives who remembered it. This book was great in telling many more details. I like how the book's content followed the flow of the flood from eastern Colorado to eastern portions of Kansas. The book has a "storytelling" feel to it rather than something academic. I like that. Good use of emotion and detail - neither dominates the other. If I have to be picky; I grew tired of the constant phrase "completely destroyed." I thought destroyed meant destroyed 100 percent. Using completely wasn't necessary. The flood is fascinating as it happened in a part of the country that is considered a dry climate and the weather pattern that caused the flood is extremely rare. That's the fascinating part of the book. Sure; the river has had high water levels since; but nothing like what caused the flood. I wonder if it could ever happen again? Good history lesson in this book!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Must ReadBy Wendel L CassThe book was well researched; the style was clear and concise and the book was condensed into a lot of information in 150 pages. Photos added to the devastation of the flood. I learned a lot of new information of which I was unaware. I believe a great amount of research went into writing this book. Ms. Hayden did a superb job of recreating the devastation; destruction and despair of the hardy people who inhabited the Republican River Valley. This is a must read for all of the people of Colorado; Nebraska and Kansas. It would also be a great read for anyone who enjoys history.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
