Review
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. great regimental historyBy david l. porembaAs we commemorate the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War; we will see many books focused on all aspects of the conflict. None more so than unit histories; which recount the wartime services of organizations from both sides. They will vary in strength; some will be good; others not so much. Some will stand above the rest. This book is one which will set the benchmark for quality Civil War history. Even more so as it honors the service of a regiment from a state whose contributions to the Union victory have been largely discounted or ignored completely.Bertera and Crawford have gone above and beyond in first; assembling what must have been an enormous amount of original sources and; second putting it all together in an extremely readable format. Diaries; letters; memoirs; contemporary newspaper accounts; letters written by soldiers to their hometown papers; official reports from all unit levels as well as some Confederate accounts have all been used extensively to keep the reader informed and headed in the right direction. There are numerous stories that make up the larger story of the 4th Michigan Infantry; stories that start with the regiments' organization in mid-1861 and continue throughout the war. Some are humorous; others are not; all recount the daily lives of the troops; their beliefs; likes and dislikes. They are definitely not happy at various times during the war; none more so than at the end of the war when; instead of being discharged; they were sent to serve in Texas; during what certainly was an interminably long extra year. This down-to-earth; non-romantic book of men at war belongs on every serious bookshelf1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A non-fiction history that reads like a novelBy James of LapeerThe 4th Michigan book was a great and interesting read. The authors have done a great job of researchiing previously unexplored letters; journals and family histories to put together a history of one key Civil War regiment. In addition to dealing with the battles; the authors have given us an insight into the day-to-day lives of soldiers in the Civil War. Kim Crawford's previous book on the 16th Michigan was also an excellent tome; but he has really elevated his game with the 4th Michigan. I recommend this book to any serious student of the Civil War.3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read and a top pick for any military and history collectionBy Midwest Book ReviewAll over the country; many companies had their own unique experience in the civil war. "The 4th Michigan Infantry in the Civil War" looks at this unit in the union and their stories of fighting throughout the civil war. Looking at particular exceptional individuals throughout the war; and their stories of their fight throughout the war and their major contribution to the defeat of the confederacy. But even as the war ends; they fight on in Texas. "The 4th Michigan Infantry in the Civil War" is an excellent read and a top pick for any military and history collection.
