During the Middle Ages; the popes of Rome claimed both spiritual authority and worldly powers; vying with emperors for supremacy; ruling over the Papal States; and legislating the norms of Christian society. They also faced profound challenges to their proclaimed primacy over Christendom. The Medieval Papacy explores the unique role that the Roman Church and its papal leadership played in the historical development of medieval Europe. Brett Edward Whalen pays special attention to the religious; intellectual and political significance of the papacy from the first century through to the Reformation in the sixteenth century.Ideal for students; scholars and general readers alike; this approachable survey helps us to understand the origins of an idea and institution that continue to shape our modern world.

New York; NY: HarperCollins Publishers @ 2006.Come all you arm-chair `ian Explorers' to heed my call. Your time belongs to your job and family. Your climate is an overcast sky; the moon's shine subdued by those clouds; the florida mid-December temperature a grueling 64ºF and you are toasty warm in your bed tonight but your imagination is yours to savor.Read this book. It is Five Stars. I could not put it down until I finished. Mick does a good job of telling many Explorers' stories of their frostbite; amputated limbs; desert thirst; the quintessential; "... the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." He only teases your mind's appetite to read the autobiographies that he speaks.Btw; you just never know; so learn how to escape the hungry jaws of an attacking anaconda and save your wife some laundry by learning to wear your Jocky® briefs last several weeks.Sincerely;Your fellow ian Explorerralph marie de largo12.12.2011175 Werdz0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book to have if you are marching through unknown territoryBy James D. CrabtreeThis book looks at various aspects of expeditions and exploration and illustrates them with real-life experiences of famous (and not so famous) characters. Problems stemming from the need for food and water; ad hoc vs. recruited teams; how much equipment to bring; etc. Overall; a good book although the quality and subject matter of some of the "spot illustrations" are puzzling.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
