Historical details include actions fought; damage sustained; prizes taken and ships sunk; dates in and out of commission; as well as when the ship left the navy; names used in other services; and the ultimate fate of each ship. Close to 150 photographs; including one of the Confederate cruiser Alabama recently uncovered by the author; bring the ships to life. Accurate and up-to-date; the coverage provided in this single volume saves readers time and the inconvenience of trying to track down information located in numerous books.

I’m originally from Nashville and I came across this book; when I was conducting research on my genealogy. My father was born and raised in a house on Jefferson ST and this book talks a lot about how important Jefferson ST was to African Americans as well as North and metropolitan Nashville; respectively. In my opinion this is a great book because many people believe that post-Civil War history was so long ago. However; I was easily able to trace my great-great grandfather; our family; and the historical impact that this book provides for their time period as well as the significance of Nashville and our heritage. Without giving away too much content of this book (you have to read it yourself); the author provides answers to many sociological and demographical issues; presently relevant today as a result of slavery and post-Civil War in the south. The book is neither rhetorical nor biased and presents facts. Great book – get it – read it!!
