YatesThis is a good introduction to ancient Greek civilization; but is plagued throughout by consistent direction errors that I blame on the editor. The book constantly confuses north with south and east with west. Just two such mistakes were talking about sailing down the Nile from the Mediterranean coast and stating that Troy was located a few kilometers west of the Aegean coast. I was also slightly annoyed by the author's fascination will Oliver Stone's pathetic movie about Alexander the Great. Other than that; this was an informative and amusing book.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Just rightBy McGuinn; Thompson; Kaukonen; Verlaine; Phillips; BassanaI teach Ancient History and we spend an entire quarter on Greece; from the Minoans to Alexander and beyond. This book is an excellent introduction to the civilization which helped give birth to the West. I would have thought that prehellenic Greece; the Minoans and the Mycenaeans would have been given the usual short shift; but the book covers the Aegean Bronze Age and all others quite well. My father; who is 85 used view Ancient History as "dust" and over the years I have convinced him that an understanding of it is crucial to being an educated person. Just think if someone had understood the history of Mesopotamia we would probably not gone into that country and created the mess that Iraq is today. Discussing that really convinced my dad; so I bought him this book for Christmas because he said he didn't know enough about the Greeks; but didn't want to have to read something that was over his head. This book was perfect. I recommend it to anyone who wants to broaden the scope of their knowledge.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book did it.
