The Ascent of Humanity: Civilization and the Human Sense of Self

PDF The Ascent of Humanity: Civilization and the Human Sense of Self by Charles Eisenstein in History

Description

In time for the 50th anniversary of the so-called "Good War"--the first of the U.N. wars--an authoritative work of history by a man who braved the battles; set in the midst of international power politics and fears of a general conflagration; the Korean War at its height involved rapid; large-scale troop movements over long distances as each side experienced both outstanding success and disaster. This book tells the full story of the first; and critical; test by the Communist bloc of Western military resolve. Instead of concentrating wholly on the dominant American involvement; Michael Hickey also sets in context the contributions--many of them quite out of proportion to the size of their contingents--of the other nations that answered the U.N. call and sent troops in response to the North Koreans' surprise attack.Drawing on a number of previously unused sources from several countries; including recently declassified documents; regimental archives; diaries; and interviews; Michael Hickey adds extensively to our knowledge of one of the most significant conflicts of modern times."...stimulating and perceptive...a thoroughly accomplished piece of work." --The Independent on Sunday"The main strength of Hickey's excellent account is its ability to combine solid analysis of high politics and strategy with gripping (and often horrifying) eye-witness accounts of life at the sharp end." --The Sunday Telegraph

Articulates so well why in this age of unprecedented material wealth; things somehow still feel so... unsatisfying. It's a relief to be able to name the problem; to understand that we can get there from here. Really; my mind is blown by this book and by The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Life ChangingBy Mike SusinskiTo fully incorporate Eisenstein's observations and conclusions; I am looking very closely how I approach the rest of the universe; from how I impact my environment to how I treat other people. The book is very well researched. He says some things many times; and that might have been necessary. I took a lot of time to read it; a few pages at a time; since the ramifications of his world view require a profound reorientation of how I see myself relating to everything.Challenging and encouraging.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Ascent of HumanityBy April ThomasCharles Eisenstein shares his deep insight into our human orientation (and identity). He traces the steps within our depart from relatedness or Wholeness; and announces our call back Home to It; and our arrival Home with the complexity that has come of our journey through separation; with all that we created and learned along the way. He is a Thinker among Thinkers such as Riane Eisler; Marianne Williamson; Chellis Glendinning; bell hooks; Joanna Macy; David Bohm; Thomas Berry; Michel Foucault; Peter Senge; Paulo Freire; and Fritjof Capra. This book is a penetrating exploration of the myriad cultural sources of our retreat from the Living world; and a journey (from the perspective of Indigenous Mind) deep into the dark; human-storical recesses of cultural hegemony. It is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the directives of our cultural evolution; and why it is that we continue to unwittingly co-create a world which; in our Hearts of Hearts; we have difficulty recognizing as the fruition of our own participation.I've been writing a similar yet unique edition on this theme my Self; and; again; I am surprised; impressed; delighted; and deeply moved - moved because I believe that as yet another of us transcends the magnetic pull of the tides of thought as it collectively exists as a system; that system is transformed. Only thought that is generative and Life-affirming can lead to human action that is regenerative! Eisenstein has been astute and thorough in this critical examination of many widely held and rarely questioned assumptions...
