However; too much time was spent on providing background information on all the key persons from both sides. Additionally; the maps provided were dated and hard to read. More maps located within narrative would have been nice.4 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The story of a massacre...By R. Edward Merrell; Jr.Probably no important battle in the history of warfare was bungled as badly as this one; fought during our Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was generally an excellent judge of men; but he certainly failed in his selection of Union commanding generals; including Burnside; the commander in this battle...until he finally hit paydirt w/Grant. Highly recommended to Civil War buffs.2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Charlie Brown of the Army of the Potomac Ambrose BurnsideBy yawaysvoiceI love this series of books and this one is no exception a great view of the battle and a great illustration of Burnsides lack of flexibility and vision but he tried to warn them no really he did.
