As Solid as GraniteBy Christian SchlectA nice book for both those first learning of U.S. Grant and also those who have already read other books about this significant figure in American history. The interested reader will find many recent biographies to fill in the voids of this story of a man who has rightfully gained ground in terms of the respect of modern historians. He was right on the Civil War and he was right on post-war voting rights for blacks. He was a plain; effective; and honest man at a time of critical national crisis.I think the brief introductory words to the extracts of Grant's various writings supplied by Professor Marszalek are clear and helpful. I especially like the fact that the professor leaves Grant's text as it originally appeared; misspellings and all.And for those who really want to be exposed to the general's clear writing style; please read his war Memoirs.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Revealing view of the General and President in his Own WordsBy Pat McKimI have read many of US Grant's biographies as well as much about the Civil War. John F. Marszalek; who wrote the excellent biography Sherman; A Passion for Order and is the curator of the Grant Presidential Library; in all places Mississippi State University; has produced an essential book on Grant. For a man that so many think is an enigma; Marszalek shows Grant in his own words to be an honest; ethical; and straight-forward man--a man truly of the people--that is fairly easy to understand; if not fathom.
