This book attempts a comparative analysis of the condition of Blacks in the new world diaspora. The editors contend that this diaspora cannot be fully understood apart from politics and social structure; or apart from the broad historical background of the political economy of plantation society; capitalism and their profound structural legacies. It brings a focused perspective to a previously neglected group of people in different nation-states who labor under very real social and political handicaps. Ultimately the themes of persistence and resilience are the focus of these essays.

Holtzapple'The Better Angels of Our Nature' is the definitive work regarding Freemasonry during the American Civil War. Author Michael Halleran extensively researched and found excellent examples and stories of Masonic brotherhood; charity; and relief during some of the most tumultuous years of our country's history. Aside from the historical interest; the book clearly documents that the brotherhood of Masonry can prevail over the evils of war. Any Mason interested in the Civil War needs to get this book and any Civil War buff should read it as well so they can discover how important the craft was to men of this generation so many years ago.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. There's a bond between Masons that you can only experience yourself. This bond was reflected during the most volatile times in our nation's history. Halleran describes in great detail the occurrences in which Masons gave aid and assistance to their masonic adversaries. To make this short; I couldn't put the book down.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read Book for American FreemasonsBy Jason M.This is an excellent book from the foremost scholar on the subject. Rather than relying on mere anecdotal accounts of the role that Freemasonry played in the American Civil War; Bro. Halleran delves into the actual history and events that took place. This is a fascinating read that kept me up way too late for several nights as I poured through the pages. Bro. Halleran should be commended on producing a book that is chock-full of facts; yet is presented in a thoroughly readable and digestible manner. This book has facilitated many a conversations in my Lodge and at social gatherings.
