In this sweeping account Clifford Dowdey recreates one of the most important battles in U.S. history. With vivid and breathtaking detail; Lee and His Men at Gettysburg is both a historical work and an honorary ode to the almost fifty thousand soldiers who died at the fields of Pennsylvania. Written with an emphasis on the Confederate forces; the book captures the brilliance and frustration of a general forced to contend with overwhelming odds and in-competent subordinates. Dowdey not only presents the facts of war; but brings to life the cast of characters that defined this singular moment in American history.

Often with books of this sort you sometimes get a very impersonal lists of locations and "fun facts"; however Greg Young and Tom Meyers have crafted an intimate and unique book about Old Manhattan that will offer both potential visitors and current residents an abundance of information; going deep into the history and movements that shaped New York into what it is today. Those who have never visited will receive an engaging tour of old Manhattan that will feel like going through a time machine. This book is filled with a plethora of locations and history about this often visited city and those who call New York their home will likely gain a new appreciation for it.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great book for anybody interested in NYCBy CustomerI have listened to this podcast for years and always enjoyed it - especially picking references to other great NYC historical resources (like supreme city). This book is a terrific accompanying companion for those podcasts and has great pictures and is well organized. I immediately went to the chapter on my neighbourhood (Bloomingdale - and if you don't know where that is; you need this book - and probably a few other ones) and I immediately learned things I did not know.I'm now working my way through the book; but from back to front as I identify more with uptown.Highly recommend to any amateur or experienced NYC historian- or any reader who wants a good insight into the history of the best city in the world. It's also a bargain !3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Highly Recommend!By LeeI recently started listening to the podcast the Bowery Boys; and really enjoy listening to them. They mentioned the release of their new book and I decided to buy it; because I thought if it’s anything like the podcast I knew I would like it.This book covers all of the different neighborhoods in Manhattan. I love all the history of New York in each area. The book flows easily and is very enjoyable to read; it like the guys are talking to you like in the podcast.I love the point of interest “stand here†it’s would be just mind boggling to stand there and look around and think about all the history that just passed by.The next time I go to New York I will take this book as a sight-seeing guide; just like a Rick Steve’s tour guide books. I highly recommend if you enjoy history or planning to head out to New York.
