The California Gold Rush and the Coming of the Civil War (Vintage Civil War Library)

ePub The California Gold Rush and the Coming of the Civil War (Vintage Civil War Library) by Leonard L. Richards in History

Description

In this spellbinding account of the real facts of the Central Park jogger case; Sarah Burns powerfully reexamines one of New York City's most notorious crimes and its aftermath. On April 20th; 1989; two passersby discovered the body of the "Central Park jogger" crumpled in a ravine. She'd been raped and severely beaten. Within days five black and Latino teenagers were apprehended; all five confessing to the crime. The staggering torrent of media coverage that ensued; coupled with fierce public outcry; exposed the deep-seated race and class divisions in New York City at the time. The minors were tried and convicted as adults despite no evidence linking them to the victim. Over a decade later; when DNA tests connected serial rapist Matias Reyes to the crime; the government; law enforcement; social institutions and media of New York were exposed as having undermined the individuals they were designed to protect. Here; Sarah Burns recounts this historic case for the first time since the young men's convictions were overturned; telling; at last; the full story of one of New York’s most legendary crimes.

Even before world war wit; being rich was jumping the gunBy sailing up chit speakBooks offer readers the frozen flexibility in which equality has been denied in the past. People who have problems dealing with all kinds of everything can relax with words on pages which never demand stop or I'll shoot. Contemplating new times for global superpower diplomatic immunity blunders likely to steal a thousand years from the future of just us fracking for the energy we need; minds that can drop back to a time when Mormons who had survived anti-Mormon wars and soldiers who fought in Mexico came to California for a new setting up future ambushes that nobody should know could not keep gold secret forever.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Essential ReadingBy FlipShould be required reading in any serious study of US history. Fabulous in exposing the true behavior and temperament of our countrymen just before and including the start of our Civil War. The idea of forcibly adding Cuba as a slave state seems preposterous if it wasn't true. The history books usually referenced in our educational system rarely depict the wretchedness of the household characters we have scrubbed squeaky clean for our history lessons. Loved reading this one from electronic cover to cover.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is an amazing book. I was bornBy PAThis is an amazing book. I was born; raised and educated here in California and thought I knew it all. But this book taught me more about California's history than I learned in public school. I read a lot and this is one of the best books in my collection.
