The autobiography of a Marine pilot; now retired; who served in WW II and the Korean War. His change of orders from flying a B-25 twin-engine bomber to a C-46 twin-engine Marine transport in 1944 was a huge disappointment that turned out to be a special blessing for Bud McDonnell. Kamikaze suicide raids on American forces in teh Pacific prompted the call-up of the land-based Marine Corsair fighter aircraft with innovative bent wings; from the Marshall Islands; two time zones west of Hawaii. Escorting them safely to the islands to counteract the Japanese kamikaze planes and saving both many Navy ships and sailors' lives was Bud's job. Nevertheless; all the Marine transports on that mission were destroyed before it was done.

Each story enriches our understanding of an aspect of the Holocaust and leaves us wanting to read and learn more about this dark period in history. From Susan Prinz Shear's collection of family letters that tell the agonizing true story of family unable to escape from Nazi Germany to Aharon Megged's powerful story that captures the tragic effects of the Holocaust on the Second Generation and beyond; these works will become must reading in all high school; college; and university classes on the Holocaust. Never was that observation more true than a reading of this marvelous book illustrates. From the first quote by Wittgenstein;to the concluding story The Name; by Aharon Megged; the narratives contained in this collection give faces to history. The thematic organization of the stories allows the teacher to pick and choose selections which can humanize classroom lectures. Readers will find it hard to put the bookdown after they have read the first story. This book is a treasure.
