This may be best urban analysis of a growing; ethnically diverse city that has been done. I'm not just talking about Detroit; but about modern big cities in general. Rather than going into a necessarily long review; I would say "just read it." It is much easier to digest if you take it part by part (it is divided into four parts). Although the book is about Detroit; it is generalizable to other cities. But more importantly; the methodology is impeccable and is described very clearly. So if you are interested in doing an analysis of the growth of another city; you can replicate Zunz's analysis. But if you are just interested in how Detroit grew from a fort to a bustling city; I highly recommend it. I sent a copy to a friend from high school; and she instantly connected with the description of the early ethnic neighborhoods. I highly recommend this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Packed with data / great for genealogistsBy Mary PackardIf you have family who came to Detroit from Germany or Poland; chances are high that they arrived in the city between the years of 1880-1920. Packed with data and analysis about employment and demographics; this book explores the sociological and economic factors they and their neighbors faced. Dozens of charts are included containing insights into Detroiters' lives. The author's research and analysis have resulted in a thorough and fascinating read.
