DOC The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine; Vol. 2: The Spirit of Eastern Christendom (600-1700) (Volume 2) by Jaroslav Pelikan in History

Description

Among the topics considered in this classic study are world origins and supernatural powers; attitudes toward the dead; the medicine man and shaman; hunting and gathering rituals; war and planting ceremonies; and newer religions; such as the Ghost Dance and the Peyote Religion."The distinctive contribution of [Red Man's Religion] is the treatment of topics; the insight and the perspective of the author; and her ability to transmit these to the reader. . . . Trais and aspects of religion are not treated as abstract entitites; to be enumerated and summated; assigned a geographic distribution; and then abandoned. No page is a dry recital; each is an illumination. Insight and wisdom are framed in poetic prose. An offering of information in such a medium merits gratitude."—American Anthropologist

That being said taking the time to read it is worth it . No matter where you start the experience is a delight . The historic context is presented to the reader and makes clear just how what went on so long ago has given us what we have today .1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Pauline GoldbergInteresting and informative--and best of all; written so a layman can understand.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great HistoryBy OneisimusI am greatly impressed by Pelikan's credentials and am finding this volume even better than the first. Of course; my sympathies lay with Orthodoxy so that may be expected. Impressive and handy references to support documents are made throughout. Highly recommended.
