ebooks The Civil War Dictionary by Mark Boatner in History

Description

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle AwardThe real story behind the major motion picture The Monuments Men. The cast of characters includes Hitler and Goering; Gertrude Stein and Marc Chagall--not to mention works by artists from Leonardo da Vinci to Pablo Picasso. And the story told in this superbly researched and suspenseful book is that of the Third Reich's war on European culture and the Allies' desperate effort to preserve it.From the Nazi purges of "Degenerate Art" and Goering's shopping sprees in occupied Paris to the perilous journey of the Mona Lisa from Paris and the painstaking reclamation of the priceless treasures of liberated Italy; The Rape of Europa is a sweeping narrative of greed; philistinism; and heroism that combines superlative scholarship with a compelling drama.

A "MUST HAVE" BOOK FOR CIVIL WAR BUFFSBy manuscriptmanI deal with a lot of Civil War items for my living ; and I and my friends have always used this book as a "Go to" book for quick reference on the facts concerning some campaign or civil War topic I am looking into. Instead of calling it a "Dictionary"; I would think of it more as a "Mini Encyclopedia" or "Amplified Dictionary" . Well written and an accepted classic in our field; it is a reference book no Civil War buff should be without.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great InfoBy Nancy HendricksonI'm working on a Civil War related writing project; so wanted this book as a reference work. The info is excellent; events and people well-covered; overall an incredibly well-done (and massive) work. My only issue was the size of the print - I wish it would have been a little bigger. I assume the choice in size was due to the size of the book itself (quite large!). This isn't a knock on the book; just a personal preference. This is working really well for my project and not sure I could have done it without this dictionary.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. OK; but not the bestBy Justin KubiakWasn't the easiest read I've ever read on the Civil War. Too much detail in some places; lacking in other. Not very comprehensive. A decent primer; but for me it didn't provide as much detail as I'd like across the board.
