The Civil War Generals: Comrades; Peers; Rivals—In Their Own Words

ebooks The Civil War Generals: Comrades; Peers; Rivals—In Their Own Words by Robert I. Girardi in History

Description

In March of 1948; the United States had withdrawn its support from the Jewish side of the Palestinian conflict; and the UN Security Council had decided to postpone the establishment of the state of Israel. The raging battle over the control of roads was ongoing; and Jewish convoys had been battered in Gush-Etzion; Western Galilee; and the road to Jerusalem. It was at this decisive point that the leader of the would-be state of Israel; David Ben Gurion; turned the Jewish strategy around. Abandoning the previous defensive strategy; Ben Gurion gave orders that began the battle of Dier Yasin; destroying Arab villages on the road to Jerusalem. Milstein's account gives new insight into this conflict; and reinvestigates the entire War of Independence. This book will be useful to historians; scholars of Middle Eastern policy and military strategy; in addition to students of international studies.

Since a bunch of those generals spent the decades after the war doing what they did best during the war -- pinning blame on each other -- I think there was more to be found. The best part about the book is that it has blurbs on lots of the more obscure generals -- particularly those killed in action and given short shrift in most history books. I found out about this book when one of the hosts of the "Hang Up and Listen" podcast gave it a shout out and compared it to Nike's Derek Jeter Respect commercial; the point being the ultimate respect is that you get from your peers. In all; a good read for Civil War buffs.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice Collection - Nothing NewBy W. B. SuddockThis is an interesting read. But; is nothing special or earth shaking. Most of it; in fact; is pretty mundane; the rest ? Just a rehash of well known information. It is nice to so to have so much in one volume. Could be a really interesting read for the someone just starting to explore the Civil War.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. will be loved.By Victoria J.
