Travel Back In TimeBy KJAGEven without the color-rendering; this is a superb collection of Civil War photos notable for the diverse and interesting subject matter; remarkable resolutions; size (some are almost one foot square); and quantity. With professional colorizing; the results are amazing. Is it 100% accurate? That is not possible; but despite some nit-picky remarks by a couple of self-proclaimed experts; it’s obvious painstaking research and work was accomplished in an effort to get it right. It’s not that the process simply adds color—it enhances contrast; depth of field; and brings out details (including facial features) that are washed out or less apparent in BW. Combined with the high resolutions and size of the photos; the subjects simply come to life. In many instances; the photos appear as if they were recently taken. For comparative purposes; the original BW photos are also provided.Photos are categorized in the following sections:1. Fellow Citizens (inc portraits of Lincoln; Davis; military leaders and ordinary troops on both sides)2. Slaves; Contrabands; Freemen3. Soldiers Civilians4. War Machines5. Destruction6. Lincoln7. Casualties (inc graphic photos)8. ConclusionLengthy captions accompany photos to identify and describe the subject/subject matter; including interesting background information; and to identify the photographer; month and year taken (where available). Historical text is also provided to introduce each section; with additional text at selected points in each section; and in the Epilogue.Finally; the album is large at 11.5 x 11 inches and about 250 pages long. The quality of the binding and paper are excellent. The semi-glossy paper is thick and very resistant to tears and absorption. The text is of average size but is dark; clean; and double-spaced; making it easy to read. It comes with a separate; 8x10 photo of a young “powder monkey†posing on the deck of the USS New Hampshire; which is suitable for framing and inserted within a protective sleeve.As a student of the Civil War; I have purchased dozens of books over the years; but hold on to a select few. He goes so far as to include a whole section on Lincoln; ruined buildings; Blacks; and dead bodies; but almost nothing on confederate troops. (Prob a 25:1 ratio US:CS) Disappointed.....
