MartinMy ancestor John Alston was apparently involved in the Monmouth Rebellion in England in 1685 as a teenager; then sold into slavery by the British after the execution of Monmouth; then sent to Barbadoes. He was freed by the authorities there; then came to North Carolina where he became the patriarch of a large group of prominent Alston descendants. His family were apparently Puritans or Quakers; and his probable grandfather Peter Alston is mentioned in letters by John Winthrope of the Massachusetts Colony; who came to America from Suffolk; where the Alstons lived. John Alston is mentioned is one of the sober and pious rebels freed; and his ship is listed. Great research; great book.
