The Counterrevolution of Slavery: Politics and Ideology in Antebellum South Carolina

ebooks The Counterrevolution of Slavery: Politics and Ideology in Antebellum South Carolina by Manisha Sinha in History

Description

A landmark work of women's history originally published in 1967; Gerda Lerner's best-selling biography of Sarah and Angelina Grimke explores the lives and ideas of the only southern women to become antislavery agents in the North and pioneers for women's rights. This revised and expanded edition includes two new primary documents and an additional essay by Lerner. In a revised introduction Lerner reinterprets her own work nearly forty years later and gives new recognition to the major significance of Sarah Grimke's feminist writings.

Excellent history of a complex periodBy HughVery well researched and thoughtful examination of the centrality of slavery and the politics of race to politics and society in South Carolina in the years before the Civil War. Buries forever the idea that the politics of this period was about purely economic matters; and shows clearly the oppressive atmosphere in this region; even in the upcountry where there were fewer slaves.6 of 7 people found the following review helpful.
