The Definition of Anti-Semitism

audiobook The Definition of Anti-Semitism by Kenneth L. Marcus in History

Description

What is anti-Semitism? The Definition of Anti-Semitism is the first book-length study to explore this central question in the context of the new anti-Semitism. Previous efforts to define 'anti-Semitism' have been complicated by the disreputable origins of the term; the discredited sources of its etymology; the diverse manifestations of the concept; and the contested politics of its applications. Nevertheless the task is an important one; not only because definitional clarity is required for the term to be understood; but also because the current conceptual confusion prevents resolution of many incidents in which anti-Semitism is manifested. The Definition of Anti-Semitism explores the various ways in which anti-Semitism has historically been defined; demonstrates the weaknesses in prior efforts; and develops a new definition of anti-Semitism; especially in the context of the 'new anti-Semitism' in American higher education.

And it's written in an accessible style ...By Linda G.This book is well worth reading; it addresses so many important questions that are frequently raised in the U.S. regarding Jews and anti-Semitism and the author does it in a comprehensive; intelligent way. And it's written in an accessible style for the general reader; even though it's grounded in extensive scholarship. The author really knows what he's talking about. He was the director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and held other similar positions so he understands issues of discrimination and civil rights at a very deep level.11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend this book!By ThePen28We were so impressed with this book that we launched a book club at our local independent book store to discuss it. We had such a big turn-out that we ran out of books to sell. Marcus was as engaging and well-spoken in person as he is in writing and we had a lively; wide-ranging discussion that only ended when the bookstore closed. The "Definition of Anti-Semitism" is impressive; well-written and well-researched -- essential reading for anyone wondering about things like when criticism of Israel crosses the line into anti-Semitism; whether Jews can be anti-Semites; and whether the BDS movement itself is anti-Semitic. Marcus offers a comprehensive; in-depth look at anti-Semitism through history; and makes a powerful argument for the need for an accepted; useful definition of anti-Semitism. I highly recommend this book to everyone who cares about issues of discrimination; racism; and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.
