The Discovery of the Nile

ebooks The Discovery of the Nile by Gianni Guadalupi in History

Description

In the Civil War; both sides understood that closing the South's ports would halt the introduction of war materiel to the industrially weak region. Though the North captured New Orleans in 1862; they did not attack the Confederate navy in Mobile Bay or the city of Mobile; Alabama; until 1864. The two-year delay allowed much needed supplies to enter the Confederacy and changed the face of the ensuing Mobile Campaign; as technological advances in ships submarines; mines and fortification made a striking difference in the fighting. This book examines the politics; preparations; leaders; and battles that made the Mobile Campaign a microcosm of the overall conduct of the Civil War.

OutstandingBy PamRWith over 300 pages; countless well-reproduced color illustrations mostly from historic prints (printed in Italy- no surprise)and oversized pages around 10 x 14 inches; this book is one of my favorite "coffee table" books. But it is more than that. It is engagingly written and filled with information on the discovery of the Nile and more. I especially like all the historic maps reprinted in it. There is so much more; too; including David Roberts' prints in very accurate color. If you are at all interested in this subject; you will love this book!8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Stunning Plates!By David AdamsThe plates in this LARGE volume are absolutely stunning! If you are at all interested in the history of Africa; it will be well worth your while to get this book before all of the cheaper copies are bought up.
