Great Short Treatment on the Early ChurchBy Ansen PlopbundleFrend’s Early Church is a published version of a series of lectures he gave at Cambridge back in 1965. They set out to trace the developments of Christianity from the early church to the Council of Chalcedon and the pontificate of Pope Leo (around AD 450).Frend is an eminent church historian; and this work is a great short read on the subject. It is more of a scholars work than a layman’s but it’s not so overly detailed that it becomes utterly boring. In fact; I greatly enjoyed it. I had read some of it in my schooling a couple of years ago; and finally got the chance to pick it up again and finish it from front to back. If you’re interested in a semi-detailed work on early church history; this would be a fine place to start.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great summary of the early Church fathers and the challenges ...By Kenneth R. HannaGreat summary of the early Church fathers and the challenges that many of them faced as they proceeded to follow the great commission in their lives!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very useful overviewBy Thomas P McCarthyThis volume covers a large swath of history neatly and as concisely and can be expected. It's seriously written; but conversational and engaging. It's beneficial to readers of many levels of experience from on overview to a review of chronologies and "players".
