This is the definite; most up to date book on Indonesian Islam and the ideological currents that influence it. Unlike others who have tackled this subject recently (e.g.; Ricklefs); The End of Innocence is concise (336 p.); focused and what's more surprising for a translated book; beautifully written and organized.There is a modicum of historical perspective; but the bulk of the material centers around the waning days of the Suharto (New Order) era; and the advent of democracy (Reformasi). Relevant to all the religious challenges facing Indonesia today.
