But provides a 19th century point of view of Lakota spirituality. The language referring to his people as Savages is dated and feels like finger nails on a black board. But he is an authentic source. A mandatory read for all AmericansBy Annie PopeThis amazing; marvelous; brilliant little boy was orphaned -- for a while -- when his father disappeared at Wounded Knee. His tribe fled to Canada and he was raised by grandparents in a tee pee. What he didn't know was that his father had not been killed; but was; in fact; captured and imprisoned by the American Army. When Ohiyesa was 12; the prison released his dad; and the two were reunited when his father finally found him. The two returned to the United States; the young boy was enrolled in American private schools. He assumed the name Charles Eastman. He was accepted by Dartmouth College; and eventually became an M.D. But it was difficult for a Native American physician to practice medicine; so writing was one way for Eastman to support himself. He wrote many essays and short books describing the values; beliefs; and lifestyle of the Sioux Native Americans. These accounts torpedo the stereotypes and present the purist possible view of Native man and woman; They are earliest; and most accurate descriptions written by a Native American in the English language; that I have been able to find so far. Eastman's works are simple; elegant; streamlined; graceful; lyrical; and profound. His writing can be; therefore; nothing less than intriguing. I believe it speaks to the soul of humanity. This author should be a big name in American literature. Why isn't he?
