The Birth of the modern US Navy.By CustomerThis book presents a very well written and researched analysis of the creation of our current naval force. the carrier is still the key surface ship in our navy. I must admit that the carrier shares its duties with many vessels. With the exceptions of the submarine; and the guided missile; the carrier is our most valuable piece of naval hardware. It is understandable that the battleship group was reluctant to give up its preeminent position in our national defense. But the disaster at Pearl Harbor; forcefully removed the capital ship from the top of the list of naval assets. The carrier was and is the only weapon that can strike an enemy at great distances. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in carrier warfare; and carrier development; and the men who risked their lives to make the fast carriers a reality. Top down view of the Pacific WarBy CustomerIt's not often that I've read an account of aircraft carrier doctrine in the Pacific War that delved this deeply into the policies and doctrines that lay behind the war effort. I have other books with lengthy lists of ship names and commission dates but which say nothing of how the ships were used or what controversies went on behind the scenes. Fast Carriers not only does that; but highlights the tension between the "formalist" admirals and the "melee" admirals; which goes far in adding depth to our understanding of the contrast beteween the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. I consider this book an important addition to my stock of WW2 naval histories.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
