Colonel Driver lets the primary sources and soldiers' diaries do the talking while he knits events together with insight and objectivity. The Appendix; listing most of those who served with the First and Second Maryland; is equally well done and may be worth of the price of the book on its own. Those interested in the contribution occupied Maryland still managed to make to the Confederate cause will want this one (and its companion on the Maryland Cavalry; CSA) on their bookshelf.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Thunder and SunshineBy ShannonThe loyalty of Robert J Driver Jr is evident in this hardbound book through his writing style. "The enemy was badly beaten; being driven at a run through the streets of Gettysburg and several miles there from an almost impregnable position at Cemetery Hill." The First Maryland Infantry was formed from Marylanders who chose to align with the Confederacy against a Union government that had invaded their state and established martial law. It can be said of the Marylanders more than any other troops in the Confederate Army that "Ever with a frolic welcome took the thunder and the sunshine." Organized at Harper's Ferry; they fought in the first battle at Bull Run and distinguished themselves for their valor. The author's military background is evident beginning with Robert J Driver's strategic Table of Contents. This book is well-written and documented. Maps; photographs and muster rolls are all found in the pages of this book. Every Civil War library should have a copy of this book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Recommended and Endorsed by An AuthorBy Stephen D. CalhounI am an author of Maryland Civil War History. I strongly recommend Mr. Driver's book. He adds to the knowledge of the difficulties of living in Maryland during the American Civil War.The Marylanders: Without Shelter or a Crumb
