The Gentleman from Ohio (Trillium Books)

audiobook The Gentleman from Ohio (Trillium Books) by Louis Stokes; David Chanoff in History

Description

Over more than two centuries men; women; and children escaped from slavery to make the Southern wilderness their home. They hid in the mountains of Virginia and the low swamps of South Carolina; they stayed in the neighborhood or paddled their way to secluded places; they buried themselves underground or built comfortable settlements. Known as maroons; they lived on their own or set up communities in swamps or other areas where they were not likely to be discovered.

I have always respected the outstanding service that Congressman Louis Stokes provided to the people of the State of Ohio. There are "Show Horses" and "Work Horses" in the Congress of the United States and in every sphere of politics. The Congressman; as he was often referred to even by his closest friends; was a "Work Horse." Yes; he was eloquent; well dressed at all times; and pure class; but most importantly; if there was a tough assignment that needed attention to detail; impartiality; strength; and a balanced and fair perspective; Congressman Louis Stokes was the man that you wanted to undertake the assignment. For the reader who truly loves America; with all of its many assets; as well as its imperfections; this book will add greatly to your knowledge base and your literary collection. It is a must read.Ray Miller(Ret.) State SenatorPublisherThe Columbus African American3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A MUST READ!By KENNETH C ROSATOI had the honor of meeting Congressman Stokes several times which made reading the story of his life all the more compelling. The Gentleman from Ohio is a wonderful read! This is a story that many can relate to. It details the rise of a poor young child with rags for clothes who grew to be a brilliant lawyer; 15-term U.S. Representative; superbly dressed; eloquent gentleman and loving family man whose legislation helped shape the nation we live in today. The story is truly inspiring and this book is wonderfully written -- you won't want to put it down.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. DETERMINATION AND PROMISEBy SonjiA must read for everyone! This was an eye opener! I learned so much from this book and understood more about this government that I never knew before. It goes to show that you can achieve and become whatever you want to be by working hard and getting a solid education but if you are minority; it is not easy to take your proper place in society. You have to fight for your rights and always remain hopeful. However; his story made me feel sad in parts - Mr. Stokes wrote from the heart and told of the indignity and prejudism that still exists today. Minorities have to work twice as hard even when qualified and are denied their rights; even when right and most of the time we have no one to appeal to. This is happening today in the workplace even in Unions. I was shaken to my core; when I read that even Judges who are supposed to uphold the law and rule fairly can be racist. I felt sadness; frustration; anger; disbelief; hopelessness; hopefulness; victorious and promise. We may have come a far way; but we still have a long way to go.
