The battle and the legacyBy Jonathan BaumBoth a history of the battle and the story of its legacy; this book is a very readable myth buster on the Marine Corps' defining moment. In spite of the incredible ferocity of the battle; it was probably pointless and did not really contribute in a meaningful way to America's victory over Japan. However; Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph was used widely as a propaganda tool to promote War Bond sales during the war and to ensure the continued existence of the USMC after it ended. Burell is a Marine officer; so no axe-grinding is going on here. Revisionism in the best sense of the word. Certainly worth reading.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
