The Heritage of World Civilizations: Volume One to 1700 (7th Edition)

DOC The Heritage of World Civilizations: Volume One to 1700 (7th Edition) by Albert M. Craig; William A. Graham; Donald Kagan; Steven Ozment; Frank M. Turner in History

Description

Using a thematic approach; this concise survey explores the many and varied threads of American history-social; intellectual; cultural; political; diplomatic; economic; and military-from the arrival of the first native American inhabitants thousand of years ago throught the crisis following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11; 2001. Irwin Unger; a Pulitzer Prize winning author; wrote this book after discovering from his own experiences teaching American History at the University of California at Davis and at NYU; that a thematic approach was much more interesting to students than a purely descriptive one.

If it were not for attending lecture; I would have been ill-prepared for understanding History. This semester; with Vol.2; which is online; I am really struggling. The flip-flop sequencing of the history; with no connections to other civilizations or their time-frame. It is piecemealed together and is one of the worst history books I have been a part of.Some of its better qualities are the snipets from historical data; most of which is tied to a small but important insight into a specific letter or event. If you must purchase the text for a class; be prepared to take detailed notes from your lecture; as an instructor is needed to tie together all the loose ends.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I liked it well enoughBy Matthew WhiteI enjoyed this book through the course I took. It's structured well; but is sometimes vague. It just covers so much content and often things aren't explained fully so you have to read between the lines. It's best if you already have a pretty good grasp of the topic being discussed but if you use it along with the other material (power points and chapter reviews) that your professor should have; you'll be fine. You probably don't have much of a choice anyway though if your professor uses the book. Good luck.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. WARNING!! Stay away from ANY class that uses this book! It is the most disorganized mess that will leave you frustratedBy BaronThis is one of the worst books ever written! I find it hard to believe they keep asking the same people to author World history! It is clearly not written with the student in mind! If you are taking a class with this book- DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS! If your professor/teacher participates in My History Lab; it might be helpful.
