Good "starter" book for kids interested in the HolocaustBy gilly8A good book: many anecdotes of children hidden in convents; monasteries; orphanages throughout the war. Everyone; from the children to the adults hiding them; would have been killed if discovered by the Nazis. When I ordered this book; I did not realize it is essentially a book for children/YA. I was disappointed but must blame myself for not reading the description of it thoroughly.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------For most adults interested in this subject; I'd recommend Martin Gilbert's "the Righteous"; The Righteous: The Unsung Heroes of the Holocaust; Eva Fogelman's book; "Conscience and Courage" Conscience and Courage: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust. Both are excellent and give examples of those who risked their lives for strangers: Schindler; Raoul Wallenburg and many less well known people.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------For books specifically about child survivors:The Girls of Room 28: Friendship; Hope; and Survival in Theresienstadt(by Hannelore Brennor)....interesting and different in that the camp at Theresienstadt was the "show camp"; shown to the International Red Cross and others to show the world how well the Nazis were treating Jews. Also: A Lucky Child: A Memoir of Surviving Auschwitz as a Young Boy (Back Bay Readers' Pick)by Thomas Beurgenthal; a fascinating story!Hidden Children of the Holocaust: Belgian Nuns and their Daring Rescue of Young Jews from the Nazisby Suzanne Vroman. There are of course; many more books and first person memoirs. The above are books I learned from and "enjoyed" though that is not the correct term.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. On Saving Some Children Who Happened to Be Jewish From Certain DeathBy LionrebThis book is labeled as a book for children; but it is really a book about Jewish children who were hidden or placed so that they might survive the coming holocaust. The one's reported about in the book did survive.. It briefly gives us snippets or synopses of each of the 20 or so children's stories whom the author contacted as adults who survived the war. While giving a sense of what some of these children went through; the most graphic details that many older survivors have told us about are not included here. This makes the book easier to read; especially for younger readers. However; the horror that others went through including the relatives of these Jewish survivors is not to be underestimated or diminished. For an entry level book about one aspect of the holocaust this book is a great start...It is still haunting and sad; but also reassuring and hopeful. There were people and institutions that were willing to allow themselves some risk so that conscience could survive. Some children were saved too.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Moving AccountBy BarbarinoI just finished another book about the Holocaust that mentioned children being smuggled out of the Warsaw ghetto in backpacks and I wanted to hear more stories about how children survived the Holocaust. This book is considered juvenile non-fiction but the information is the same regardless of the reader's age. Howard Greenfeld does a very good job organizing the stories of children who were hidden during the Holocaust. He includes their stories in their own words as well as photographs of the survivors.A moving collection regardless of the reader's age.
