The History of the Hudson River Valley: From Wilderness to the Civil War

ebooks The History of the Hudson River Valley: From Wilderness to the Civil War by Vernon Benjamin in History

Description

In the tradition of great tales of men against the sea; Adak offers a compelling look at courage and commitment in the face of certain tragedy. Alfa Foxtrot 586 was a P-3 Orion on station on a sensitive Cold War mission off the Kamchatka Peninsula on 26 October 1978. When a propeller malfunction turned into an engine fire; the pilot was forced to ditch his turboprop into the empty; mountainous seas west of the Aleutian Islands. The aircraft went down in just ninety seconds; taking one of the three rafts with it. Thirteen men launched the other rafts; the smallest of which―terribly overcrowded―soon began to leak; threatening the nine men aboard. This account of the flight crew's desperate battle against the sea; and the heroic efforts to rescue them provide an engrossing true story of survival.

I bought it used; but it took 5 weeks to arrive. I bought it to read on a trip; it missed that deadline and I had to buy something else. Will not buy from that vendor again.7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. intelligent account of the history of the Hudson ValleyBy Halyna A. BarannikThis is a well-researched; intelligent account of the history of the Hudson Valley. At a special library lecture program; I listened to the author describe how he approached the topic; for example; starting with geology; which is how trails were made. Society grew around these travel routes. Totally fascinating; although a very dense read. I digest each paragraph slowly; but with great delight and satisfaction.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
