The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization

ePub The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization by Jonathan Lyons in History

Description

A Best Book of the Year- The Economist the Wall Street JournalAt the heart of Africa is the Congo; a country the size of Western Europe; bordering nine other nations; that since 1996 has been wracked by a brutal war in which millions have died. In Dancing in the Glory of Monsters; renowned political activist and researcher Jason K. Stearns has written a compelling and deeply-reported narrative of how Congo became a failed state that collapsed into a war of retaliatory massacres. Stearns brilliantly describes the key perpetrators; many of whom he met personally; and highlights the nature of the political system that brought these people to power; as well as the moral decisions with which the war confronted them. Now updated with a new introduction; Dancing in the Glory of Monsters tells the full story of Africa's Great War.

The book offered many detailed examples of their advancements and their way of thinking which was great because the reader got a sense of their everyday life as well and what they valued most in their society which was knowledge and education. The language was a bit difficult to understand but overall; very informative and interesting!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I should have listened to the other reviewers. Could ...By ace.geneI should have listened to the other reviewers. Could not get past the first few chapters because it was clear the author had not done detailed research tracing specifics to the western discoveries. Just keeps repeating the same theme in generalities throughout.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Easy Read with Heavy Historical ContextBy joseph olceseThis book was assigned to me for my college Western Tradition course as an outside source of information. Very easy read; though monotonous and ongoing at some parts; and full of enlightening historical context. Changes the perception of the Arab contribution to modern society in a short read. Would suggest to anyone studying the topics relating to the Arabs influence on the Western Hemisphere.
