What this book is - more than anything - is a history book. If you're interested in the "other side;" the non-prevalent (some would say "dated;" I would say passionate) look at past and present issues facing Chicanos today; this is a good start. If nothing else; you've got the dates; events; history up the wazoo (pardon my language). Additionally; Navarro presents many a pressing point. Nativists; however; will surely find it a threat.Navarro's book presents historical information; cites authorities on the topic; to provide FACTS that occurred in our history. What IS one-sided is the fact that in the United States; our curriculum focuses on all our victories; as well as western civilization...but says NOTHING about our neighbors despite the fact that their histories have contributed to shaping of our landscape. This is a must read to have a solid understanding about our immigration history.
