From the beginning of American chattel slavery in 1619; until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865; Africans were hunted like animals; captured; sold; tortured and raped. They experienced the worst kind of physical; emotional; psycho- logical and spiritual abuse. Given such history; Dr. Joy DeGruy asks; “Isn’t it likely that many slaves were severely traumatized? Furthermore; did the trauma and the effects of such horrific abuse end with the abolition of slavery?â€Emancipation was followed by one hundred more years of institutionalized subjugation through the enactment of Black Codes and Jim Crow laws; peonage and convict leasing; and domestic terrorism and lynching. Today the violations continue; and when combined with the crimes of the past; result in yet unmeasured injury. What do repeated traumas visited upon generation after generation of a people produce? What are the impacts of the ordeals associated with chattel slavery; and with the institutions that followed; on African Americans today? Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing; answers theses questions and more. Dr. DeGruy encourages African Americans to view their attitudes; assumptions; and behaviors through the lens of history and so gain a greater understanding of the impact centuries of slavery and oppression has had on African Americans. “With this understanding we can explore the role our history has played in the evolution of our thoughts; feelings; and behaviors; both negative and positive. This exploration will help lay the foundation necessary to ensure our well- being and the sustained health of future generations.

One of the best books that I have read all year round.By Austin EllisOut of the four book series; my very first purchase was of the interracial con-game. This book was one of the best books out of the four book series to me for the simple fact alone that it debunks the myths that surround and gravitate towards interracial relationships. The authors have worked very hard on this book and I would strongly recommend this book to anybody who is a firm believer in black love and black unity. The lies and trends that black people are bombarded with concerning interracial relationships is all explained and even exposed within the context of this very book alone. Of course the book also tells and talks about how interracial relationships are used as a tool and a conspiratorial weapon to divide both black men and black women from one another in the most deepest and historical manner imaginable. I would highly recommend it for people who are serious about black liberation for victims of racism/white supremacy.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Truth is HereBy Moses Wayne Rhone JrI found this book to be most constructive in revealing truth about the confusion of non-white people by white people under the guise of an "intimate relationship". Umoja has pointed out in great detail why it is highly incorrect to engage in sex with white people as long as we are under a global system of white supremacy. I was first given the true knowledge of such pairings by the great Dr. Frances Cress Welsing in her book The Isis Papers: Keys to the Colors. The Interracial Con Game expands on the 8th area of activity in great detail. As a black male I appreciated this very accurate and telling indictment of such dangerous unions.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Great Teaching Aid to Teach the Black FamilyBy Fares SThis book is a very important piece of literature for Black people; once Blacks realize that war has been waged on the Black Collective; this books delves deeper into one of the many tricks and strategies that White Supremacy used in its psychological and physical war against Black People. The main problem of the Black collective is they are not aware or conscious of what white people are doing; this book helps to solve that problem.
