During the Battle of the Bulge; the 101st Airborne made their legendary stand at Bastogne. But their heroics never could have happened if not for the unsung efforts of others. This is the powerful yet little-known story of the bloody delaying action fought by the 28th Infantry Division; elements of the 9th and 10th Armored Divisions; and other; smaller units. Outnumbered and outgunned; they made the Germans pay for every icy inch of ground they gained. It was their gallant efforts that allowed the 101st Airborne to reach and fully occupy Bastogne and prepare for the ferocious attack to come. Featuring numerous helpful maps and a complete list of the soldiers; local civilians; and German commanders whose actions it recounts; Alamo in the Ardennes provides a compelling; day-by-day account of this pivotal moment in America's greatest war.

Howard Fast relies on his skills as a journalist; screenwriter and storyteller to breathe life into an expansive history of a people. I knew most of the "facts" from my formal history studies and my many years of religious study. What I didn't understand was the context; the platform or stage; if you will; on which this great story has played out. An example: I had not previously grasped how early and how widespread and how prominent were multiple phases of settlement of the Jews across the entire known world. Now I want to go back and revisit the traditional histories to see how I missed that context the first time around.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gave me a new perspectiveBy Leo in OrlandoAlthough I'm not Jewish; I have known many Jews throughout my life. This book gave me a new perspective and understanding. It is not a religious work but; rather historical and sociological. Highly recommend.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
