Limerick is one of the most engaging historians writing today. --Richard White The "settling" of the American West has been perceived throughout the world as a series of quaint; violent; and romantic adventures. But in fact; Patricia Nelson Limerick argues; the West has a history grounded primarily in economic reality; in hardheaded questions of profit; loss; competition; and consolidation. Here she interprets the stories and the characters in a new way: the trappers; traders; Indians; farmers; oilmen; cowboys; and sheriffs of the Old West "meant business" in more ways than one; and their descendents mean business today. 28 illustrations

Fascinating Account of early L.A. and MalibuBy Thomas GroverThis brief but riveting book follows the life of Frederick and May Rindge following their departure from Cambridge; Mass and their purchase of an enormous ranch which consisted of virtually all of Malibu. The story of the fantastically wealthy couple and their efforts to maintain their ranch in the face of enormous population growth early in the 20th century is informative and entertaining. However; equally as fascinating is the author's description of the growth of Los Angeles Santa Monica during those years. I highly recommend this book if you are someone interested in the historical development of Southern California.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read!By CustomerThis book was beautifully written and reflected the amazing history of the fight for Malibu. This gifted author has given readers much insight into Frederick and May Rindge and their lives. It was inspiring as well as enjoyable reading that I didn't want to put down. The research that went into this effort was above and beyond anything imagined and it certainly paid off. My heart went out to these folks and being able to read their direct thoughts through the frequent quotes was great.I would recommend this to anyone; history buffs or anyone who enjoys a good read!
