I think the really old ones are best; and these are typically quite short (e.g.; 1 to 2 pages). Much of the book centers upon the last century; but there is still plenty of really old content in the first 1/3 of the book. Look at the book dimensions! The reason is because I wish there was more from the ancient time period. There is one small submission from ancient Sumer. The bulk is Industrial Revolution and Modern Day. It is fascinating to actually "hear" what people said at the time. I got this for my Husband and he loves reading it . You can jump around and read across the spectrum... and not get an "E" for jumping around in the book.
