audiobook The Memoirs of Lt. Henry Timberlake: The Story of a Soldier; Adventurer; and Emissary to the Cherokees; 1756-1765 by From Brand: The University of North Carolina Press in History

Description

An Example for All the Land reveals Washington; D.C. as a laboratory for social policy in the era of emancipation and the Civil War. In this panoramic study; Kate Masur provides a nuanced account of African Americans' grassroots activism; municipal politics; and the U.S. Congress. She tells the provocative story of how black men's right to vote transformed local affairs; and how; in short order; city reformers made that right virtually meaningless. Bringing the question of equality to the forefront of Reconstruction scholarship; this widely praised study explores how concerns about public and private space; civilization; and dependency informed the period's debate over rights and citizenship.

Exciting and informative.By Jeffrey S PalmerI was born and raised in Knoxville; Tennessee and it was a huge thrill to read Timberlake's detailed account about his mission traveling down the Holston in 1761 in a canoe to meet the Cherokee near present day Loudon. Although Timberlake and his several companions were invited by the Cherokee; there was substantial risk since the same group of Cherokee had massacred a large portion of the Fort Loudon garrison the previous year. Timberlake later escorted several Cherokee tribal leaders to London. ( And in my opinion; Timberlake was horribly betrayed my the Crown and Parliament and died an early; debt burdened death as a result.)I loved reading Timberlake's description of the wilderness area that would later become East Tennessee!! It amazes me that this book was not a required read for all school districts in this area!!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
