The New American Zionism

DOC The New American Zionism by Theodore Sasson in History

Description

This commentary on the New Testament by John Lightfoot is a unique addition to the studious Christian's library. With the Gospels written within a first century Jewish context; some of the meaning; nuance and hidden reference is lost upon the modern reader. Within these pages; Lightfoot uses the Talmud (a main text of history; tradition; ethics and scriptural commentary in Judaism) and other Judaic sources; to bring cultural background and historical flavor to the familiar verses of the Gospels; giving them new life and new insight. Though the author passed away before the full completion of this epic work; "A Commentary of the New Testament from the Talmud and Hebraica" proves to be an invaluable tool for bringing fresh light upon those obsure years of the first century. [This edition contains the entirety of the verse-by-verse commentary of the Gospels from the original work; but omits the "Chorographical Details;" being non-commentary notes about the regions and districts of Israel.]

Review
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent and NeededBy MattThis was an excellent and needed rethink on the status of Israel in the American Jewish community. I've been working on college campuses doing Israel engagement work for years; and I found the author's assessments to be consistently on the mark. Israel supporters have reframed what "support" means to them; and it's not necessarily a crisis. More people than ever are supporting Israel in more diverse ways than ever; and it's not all captured in a Pew survey. The author looks at programs like Birthright and trends within the community and places support for Israel in a context; debunking some important myths along the way (i.e.; the younger generation is less supportive of Israel than ones prior). I'm constantly reading Zionism/Israel books; including ones that claim to be topical and fresh and important. But this is literally the first time I've been on to write a review. If you care about Israel and want to do more; read this book.
