Through stories; statistics; biblical references and repeated appeals to both our hearts and minds; a powerful argument is made that immigration is good for America and more immigration is better for us--especially those of us who believe that vibrant Christianity and population growth are important. As a socially conservative Republican Evangelical minister; I represent the very demographic Castleberry hopes to convince. The bottom line is that he succeeds masterfully. His most difficult hurdle is the argument that illegal immigrants "cut in line;" "broke the law;" and thus violated God's commandment to obey governing authorities whenever possible. He cogently points out that there really is no orderly; lawful line that Mexicans and Central/South Americans can get into. Further; our borders are loosely guarded on purpose; so that Mexicans can come in illegally; and be paid sub-minimum wages. Then we charge them social security taxes that they can never gain a return from; since they must use false numbers. To top it off; we use liberal-progressive environmental regulations to keep poorer countries from developing; claiming that they pollute the earth when they do so. Then we provide them aid; which drives their own farmers out of business. At the same time we slap high tarriffs on their products; making it impossible for them to sell to us. THEN; when the best and brightest of these poor lands attempt to come to America for a better life; we label them illegal; and criticize them doing what God created them to do--go forth; take dominion; prosper; and multiply.The New Pilgrims is a couple of years old; and does not address the potential danger that certain countries may present. However; the over-arching point that immigrants tend to be hungry for success; hard work; and vibrant optimism. We do well to welcome them. Does anyone really believe; liberal or conservative; Democrat or Republican; that the U.S. cannot update it's immigration systems; and find a way to promote orderly; safe; and economically sound immigration? He correctly believes that today's immigrants are vital to the vitality of the American Church and our society at large. This aspect of immigration is overlooked in the church today.
