I loved Sheila Weller's immensely entertainingBy Elin Schoen BrockmanI loved Sheila Weller's immensely entertaining; moving; and sometimes heartbreaking memoir; "Dancing at Ciro's;" and her bestselling and groundbreaking (because writing a biography of one person is challenging enough!) biography of the three superstar singer/songwriters she further immortalized as "Girls Like Us" -- Joni Mitchell; Carole King; and Carly Simon -- because they provided the soundtrack for the lives of women like herself -- and me! So naturally I could not wait to read "The News Sorority;" in which -- in the tradition of "Girls LIke Us" -- Weller brilliantly chronicles and analyzes the rise and rise and rise of the three arguably most influential superstar journalists of recent decades -- and; in the process of telling their stories; into which she has poured years of meticulous research (she's herself a formidable journalist!) -- provides fresh insights into what it took and what it's meant for these woman not merely to succeed; but to succeed spectacularly; in a field dominated by men. So I brought the book with me on vacation -- the hardcover; mind you; not the Kindle edition; which was unprecedented for me. I travel light! I've never before traveled with a hardcover book! And it was worth every ounce of extra weight. I'm now soaking up the Florida sun; immersed in not one; but three; great life stories. What more could I ask? The News Sorority not a place for the faint of heartBy Art BrodskySheila Weller has written a book that's fascinating on many levels. At one level; it is a well-reported; expertly crafted triple biography of three of our most prominent women in the news business. Much as Weller did with Girls LIke Us; the bio of Joni Mitchell; Carly Simon and Carole King; she weaves the stories of Diane Sawyer; Katie Couric and Christiane Amanpour through their private lives; and their careers. On another level; if you step away for a bit; it's a real commentary on what women face in a tough; male-dominated profession. You can see some of the different attitudes that Sawyer had to put up with and how much; or how little; things changed by the time the other two came along. If you wondered why Sawyer was such a fixture on the ABC evening newscast; while Couric was in trouble almost from the start at the CBS evening broadcast; this book will tell you why. All three have left their primary stages now. Sawyer retired; Couric was booted from the CBS and is now at Yahoo!; while Amanpour was banished to the CNN hinterlands.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
