The Nicene Heresy - Christendom and War: Reverence and Critique

PDF The Nicene Heresy - Christendom and War: Reverence and Critique by Blase Bonpane in History

Description

The long agony was over: Kansas; as of January 29; 1861; was a state—it had "moved to America." In Leavenworth; Lawrence; Topeka; and other towns Kansans celebrated the "glorious news" of the coming of statehood in a "fury of excitement." Cannons boomed; cheering crowds gathered on the street corners; a judge and a militia general stood on their heads; and the saloons were scenes of inebriated revelry. So begins Albert Castel's classic history of Kansas during the Civil War. Long recognized as a key study on the war in the trans-Mississippi West; Civil War Kansas describes the political; military; social; and economic events of the state's first four years. Castel contributes to a better understanding of the Civil War in this region through a realistic presentation and analysis of the Kansas-Missouri border conflict; the operations of the Missouri guerrillas under Quantrill; and the Union and Confederate military campaigns in Missouri; Arkansas; the Indian Territory; and Kansas itself.

FewkesI was aware of The Council of Nicea; but Father Bonpane's observation that the Council was part of a plan by the Emperor Constantine to consolidate his power in The Roman Empire with the cooperation of the Church hierarchy and thereby bring the citizenry under control was very revealing. My understanding; and it was very favorable to the Catholic Church; was that the Emperor had a conversion experience. Now that I am older and realize much more how power works in the world; Father Bonpane's observation makes perfect sense to me.The Catholic Church's history of inflicting pain and death on the very people that they are supposed to protect and nurture is a painful revelation. It is something that I have felt for a long time and Father Bonpane's book brought those feelings into focus.Jesus' message in the Gospels is that we should love one another. It is not a message that is confined simply to those who profess Christianty; every human hears this voice in the deepest recesses of his or her soul. That voice is our salvation.Thank you Father Bonpane.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy james m.great read0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
