The Oracles of the Ancient World: A Complete Guide (Duckworth Archaeology)

ePub The Oracles of the Ancient World: A Complete Guide (Duckworth Archaeology) by Trevor Curnow in History

Description

After his defeat by Nelson at Trafalgar; Napoleon knew he could never invade England. Many thought he would try to take over the vast; crumbling Ottoman Empire; return to Egypt and even march on India. So the British concentrated on the Mediterranean: for a decade it became the scene of dangers - real or imagined - and of battles - both on land and at sea. All was dictated by a fierce determination to stop Napoleon. There were triumphs and disasters in remote and exotic places; and a Trafalgar in miniature was fought between frigate squadrons in the Adriatic. The Peninsular War might well have been fought in another peninsula: Italy. Bizarre rulers had to be flattered; or fought: the Bourbons in Palmero and Napoleon's dashing brother-in-law; Marshal Murat; King of Naples. The successors to Nelson and predecessors of Wellington fought there; amongst them Lord Collingwood; Sir Sidney Smith and Sir John Moore. Napoleon himself materialised at his most magnificent in Venice and in humiliating exile on Elba. Of course; Napoleon himself did not see it like that; and the outcome was startling for all...

It is complete with B/W pictures graphically describing the anicent oracles of Eastern and Western Europe including the famous Delphi Oracle. Curnow goes the extra mile when he gives every oracle its longitudinal and latitudinal degree position which pinpoints its exact geographical location. There is also a great set of maps showing by country the oracle's location. Anyone who is a fan of the ancient world will surely love this book!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Oracle encyclopediaBy Prof Benno ZuiddamMy apologies; I wasn't able to access and correct the star-rating in my previous review. Should never have been one. Hopefully this will compensate.1 of 8 people found the following review helpful. An Encyclopaedia of OraclesBy Dr. Benno A. ZuiddamThis is a book for anyone who is interested in the oracles of the ancient world. Dr Trevor Curnow provides a general introduction into the world of oracles; why people used them and how these oracles functioned. A helpful list of prominent technical terms and words that require classical expertise can be found at the end of the book. The main part of this book could be referred to as an encyclopaedia of oracles. Most if not all ancient sites pass the review and are classified by the name of their geographical site. The entries are relatively short; like encyclopaedia articles; but the book encorporates the latest scholarly research in archaeology and classical studies.
