Accompanying Transcending Trauma is a CD of full-text life histories that documents the survivor experience. In seven comprehensive interviews; survivors paint a picture of life before and after war and trauma: their own feelings; beliefs; and personalities as well as those of their family; their struggles to deal with loss and suffering; and the ways in which their family relationships were able; in some cases; to mediate the transmission of trauma across generations and help the survivors transcend the trauma of their experiences.

He provides an incisive critique of the racism inherent in much of Zionist thinking and how it affected not only their treatment of Palestinians historically; but also Zionist encounters with Middle Eastern Jews and their attempts to make them "Israeli" (ie: European and western). Also included is a conversation between Joseph Massad and Benny Morris; where he ruthlessly confronts Benny Morris's racist thinking on Palestinians and Arabs. The tone is academic yet critical and even border-line polemical but that is often what is needed to discuss a colonial settler ideology that continues to impact the region today. Massad is deservedly recognized as the foremost academic champion of the Palestinians since Edward Said and this book indicates why.
