Anatomy of Four Race Riots is a study of the terrible racial violence that erupted in four different communities of America during the post World War I years; racial violence that left hundreds dead or injured and a massive amount of destruction in its wake.Although the igniting incident or event varied somewhat; there was a similarity in the racial climate that existed in each town. The emerging blacks; boosted economically and idealistically by the war effort; were viewed as a threat by some of the whites. The bloody confrontations described here were grave evidence of the intensity of the fear and hatred that existed between a portion of the races.

Revealing.By Jeffrey E EllisTHE PREACHER AND THE PRESIDENTS is an extraordinary book about an extraordinary man and the people he ministered to.Gibbs and Duffy deserve high praise for their objectiveness; clarity; and probity. They neither idolize nor vilify their subject and instead present him clear and unvarnished. It is remarkable that Billy Graham dwelt so long near the flame of power without being burned; singed certainly; but not consumed. He would tell us that it was the Lord that kept him humble; faithful and true; and that he was; above all; forgiven his failings; like everyone who comes to Jesus. Nobody's perfect; not even Billy Graham; and I respect the fact that he is first to set the record straight in that regard. That message of love has set him apart from other religious leaders; preachers and evangelists. Refusing to enter the fray over "hot button" topics; he presented a message of God's love for everyone he met. His life has been one long crusade to speak that simple truth to millions of people; the poor and the powerful; and intimately to the most powerful people on earth: nine American Presidents. The book brought full force the legacy of Ronald Reagan and the often-unseen role of faith on his Presidency. I was deeply moved to read of his special relationship with Graham. Also revealing are the accounts of the Clintons; Nixons; Johnsons and others who shaped recent history. This is a fascinating book and well worth the effort for a deeper understanding of America; her Presidents; and of a Preacher who served them all.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Terrific History of the Intersection of Preacher and PresidentBy Daniel DarlingAfter reading Just As I Am I immediately purchased The Preacher and the Presidents; which expands on Billy Graham's influence over U.S. Presidents from Truman until George W. Bush (the book was written before President Obama took office). I love U.S. History; especially Presidential history; so this book scratched that itch. What was interesting about The Preacher and the Presidents is just how involved Billy Graham was in American politics; especially in his early days. At one point there was a serious draft movement to get Dr. Graham himself to run for President. He steadfastly refused; knowing God had called him to ministry. But that doesn't mean he wasn't heavily involved in influencing politics and policy; especially in the early years. Looking back; he views much of his involvement as a mistake and in later years disciplined himself to being simply a trusted confidant of the Presidents. What is so moving about Billy Graham's work with each leader is his trustworthiness. He was the guy they were down; when someone passed away; when they needed spiritual leadership. Billy Graham put himself in a position to minister spiritually to these men; who often felt isolated and alone in the White House. And he shared Christ and led most of them to a saving knowledge of Jesus. We can only praise God for this aspect of Dr. Graham's ministry and perhaps Christians today can emulate his kindhearted love of even the most despised politicians.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. IntriguingBy Christy Tillery FrenchI bought this book for my dad and he raved about it so much; I borrowed it back. Billy Graham is an icon; a man of deep faith whose counsel has been sought by Presidents and world leaders. Although a Baptist; Graham has the unique ability to transcend that barrier when dealing with people of differing religions. He is a man who appeals to all; no matter their faith; ecoclass; or race. The book provides an intriguing peek into one man's impact on presidencies through the years; his insight into his past life; the people he has counseled; and his views. Absolutely fascinating.
