The President's Daughter

ePub The President's Daughter by Nan Britton in History

Description

Crusade means a war for the sake of the Cross; a war to protect Christian people from persecution and death on account of their faith in Jesus Christ. Everyone has heard of the crusades of the Middle Ages. But few know of the crusade in our time; which living men still remember; fought for this same purpose only sixty years ago in Spain. In just six months of the year 1936; thirteen bishops and nearly seven thousand priests; seminarians; monks; and nuns were martyred in Spain by enemies of Christianity. It was the greatest clerical bloodletting in so short a span of time since the persecutions on the Church by the ancient Roman emperors. Already Pope John Paul II has beatified some two hundred of these martyrs. Tens of thousands of churches; chapels; and shrines in Spain were pillaged or destroyed. In response; faithful Spanish Catholics proclaimed a crusade. Against all odds the crusaders triumphed; and the Church and the Faith in Spain were saved. This is the story of that crusade; now honored in no other book in print in the English language. Most people who know of the Spanish Civil War do not understand why it was fought or how it was really won. This book will tell you. There is no story like it in the history of the twentieth century.

However the affectionate words the author used so often was a bit too much. Dearie; darling and other expressions of love she had for him (since age 14 according to her with him being 30 years older) made me feel like...okay; I get it... Enough already.I was glad to finally finish the book; and I have to admit that I thought she should have done more for herself than beg others for help and to keep indulging in her long drawn out pity party. I wonder what her child felt as she grew up after being moved from house to house and from caretaker to caretaker. Nan Britton never seemed to finish any goal she started except maybe this book. I know times were hard in those years; but she just did not take control of their circumstances. What made me read this book was a news story recently where her great grandson and a descendant of Warren Harding both had DNA tests done which did prove that Nan Britton's child was indeed Warren Harding's child.12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Warren Harding out of the closet; at last!By Dr. WatsonNan Britton is at last vindicated with the release of the DNA evidence that Warren Harding was her real father. Forget all the previous Harding family diatribe about his having mumps (a smoke screen) and the "court historians" who are now back out of the woodwork stating that it settles the matter; "but that he was a great president." (more hogwash; see other books about the verified scandals in his presidency.) Then there is one of Warren's doctor relatives; who is still resisting the obvious.. Yes; Warren was in the coat closet off his oval office; in New York hotel rooms; ad nausem. Hmmmmm....maybe we can; in the years to come; get to the bottom of Warren's steamy relationship with Carrie Phillips; and others; including his Senate secretary; et.al. Case Closed!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. INTERESTINGBy SparkyA very interesting read in many ways. The author was a bit crazy to get so involved with Mr. Harding; and he seemed to take advantage of her infatuation and immaturity. I can see how the society in that day and age would not view her story as credible. His other supposed affair with another woman was not mentioned in this book. Very interesting. No president is perfect; and it seems that Mr. Harding and his wife were not a good match.
