By focussing on a key industry rather than the battlefield; the author gives the reader more insight into the collapse of the Confederacy than any military history will reveal. It was the South's inability to organize and manage those resources that were at its disposal (which would have required concluding that military victory required setting aside the supremacy of states' rights over those of the confederacy in times of war) that prevented them from imposing an early peace through stalemate.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ... book is listed in "In Tall Cotton" and with good reason. It is an excellent reference on not only the importance of the railroad system in the South to the Confederate States but also on how lack of raw materials; interstate and inter-company bickering and decay of rolling stock caused the entire railroad sytem to deliver far less than was needed. Black has done an excellent job of finding somewhat obscure pieces of information and weaving them into a story that is hard to put down. If you are interested in building a library about the Confederate States of America; this book definitely deserves some shelf space.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book does a great job of opening a window that most people never thought of looking through.
