Gives more insight into Prince Phillip and Prince Charles; but makes Princess Diane look more like a nut case the family had to deal with. I suppose it depends on how you interpret everything ever documented and printed on Diana and what you choose to believe. Interesting insight into Queen Elizabeths life as a child and a queen. At home/in private she's laid back and more like the average guy; but she has decades of experience in the political sphere that she can share with her Prime Ministers and she dodges uncomfortable situations with a practiced and long learned skill. I wouldn't want her job- no thanks.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not That Intimate; But A Good StudyBy John D. CofieldQueen Elizabeth II must be one of the best known and least known personalities in the modern world. She's been in the public view almost constantly since becoming Queen 60 years ago; but at the same time much of her private life and private views remain largely unknown. Andrew Marr's study of the Queen cannot be called a full fledged biography; since it focusses primarily on her time as Queen; providing short character studies and vignettes of important events rather than a full chronicle. Its not really an "intimate portrait"; but it does give us a pretty good idea of the Queen's reactions to and participation in some of the most importaant events of her reign.I enjoyed this well written and engaging work; which is current enough to include a description of the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in April 2011. I found the discussions of the personalities of the different Prime Ministers with whom the Queen has worked interesting; and I was equally engaged with the material covering her dealings with people like Ian Smith and Idi Amin. I'm an American Anglophile of long standing; and I found my admiration for this quiet; dutiful; and hardworking lady enhanced by Marr's work.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
