PDF The Rise of Western Power: A Comparative History of Western Civilization by Jonathan Daly in History

Description

This collection of writings by John Brown in the fateful days after his raid on Harper's Ferry showcase the depth of conviction of Brown's character. Paired with Louis DeCaro's narrative of the aftermath; trial; and execution of John Brown in Freedom's Dawn: The Last Days of John Brown in Virginia; this book preserves the first-hand experience of Brown as he gave his life for the abolitionist cause.

Multi-faceted ReasonsBy BruceThe Rise of Western Power is an excellent starting point to learn of the multi-faceted reasons for the divergence of the West from the East. As the table of contents is available for review I will not list all the different categories. This is the books strongest point; as it is reasonable to expect that there were many factors which caused Europe to go from a backwater to take the lead. I agree with the author that humans around the world have proven adaptable to their environment given sufficient time for culture to develop solutions to the challenges faced; provided initiatives to find solutions were not hindered by mindsets and societal restrictions. There is also a comparison primarily of China verses Europe; but as the recent research is filling in the unknown features of China's past an experienced reader will wish there was more on this aspect. For an experienced readers overview or a reader wanting to understand the many possible reasons for the great divergence I recommend this book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
