It is no secret: the body of Christ in the United States is broken. While universality—and unity amid diversity—is a fundamental characteristic of Roman Catholicism; all-too-familiar issues related to gender; sexuality; race; and authority have rent the church. Healthy debates; characteristic of a living tradition; suffer instead from an absence of genuine engagement and dialogue. But there is still much that binds American Catholics. In naming the wounds and exploring their social and religious underpinnings; Polarization in the US Catholic Church underscores how shared beliefs and aspirations can heal deep fissures and the hurts they have caused. Cutting across disciplinary and political lines; this volume brings essential commentary in the direction of reclaimed universality among American Catholics.

A great overview of 19th century black politicsBy Corran HornThis is a wonderful volume on 19th century black politics in the American South from the Civil War through 1900. By focusing on six key figures; Dinnella-Borrego is able to demonstrate African American courage in the face of overwhelming odds; constant violence; and pervasive racism. He also persuasively shows that these congressmen were not elitists with no concern for ordinary southern blacks' lives and issues; but rather they understood and served their constituents very well. African-American history is increasingly one of the most studied aspects of 19th US history; and the author does an excellent job of relating his work to a large body of previous scholarship from a diverse array of historians. In short; I see this book as significant contribution to scholarship and also recommend it to teachers looking for an excellent; readable overview of black politics 1861-1900. The fact that the author demonstrates a masterful understanding of past historiography also makes it a great resource for introducing students to the current scholarly and historiographical trends in African-American history.
